An alpinist high on the Rochefort Ridge with the Chamonix Aiguilles as a backdrop and the Mer de Glace below. The dark and light bands on the glacier show the considerable rate of flow of the ice, which is more than 120 metres a year in its upper part, to about 90 metres per year beneath Montenvers. This equates to approximately one centimetre per hour. When this photo was taken we were making the return trip to Helbronner along the ridge, having made an early start from the Torino Hut and climbing the Aiguille de Rochefort.
