The Dents du Coste Counier and the Alpinist Cat

We’ve been having some really warm weather and it was forecast to deteriorate on Tuesday afternoon with storms possible. Richard and Claire wanted to tackle a reasonably technical route and extend themselves a bit, and we also wanted an easy hut walk on Monday. With snow conditions poor and the possibility of bad weather later on Tuesday we chose a lower level classic rock route, the traverse of the Dents du Coste Counier. It’s a lovely approach alongside the Torrent des Bans, by car as far as Entre-les-Aigues and then a short hut walk. We had the fantastic little hut to ourselves save for the guardian and his Alpinist Cat, who followed us up the neve fields nearly as far as the first rocks. Apparantly the cat is quite an accomplished mountaineer, but this was his first big trip of the season above the snowline. Anyhow, we all had a good day out on the hill, the weather did close in as predicted, but we all made it back to the hut for an amazing omlette and beer before heading back down to the car.
