Eric, Ingrid, Lesley and Gail have just completed a traverse of the Classic Haute Route with me, on the final week of Adventure Peaks Summer Alpine Courses programme. At long last we’ve experienced full on summer alpine weather, and the scorching sunshine lasted right up until the final day. It’s late in the season to be attempting this itinerary including the Plateau du Couloir, and we did experience some icy conditions and a bit of rockfall. Conditions were certainly tough, the hot weather slowed us down and we had multiple long days. We made a slight change to the planned itinerary so we could have a shorter day ending at the comfortable Hotel du Glacier in Arolla, and the chance to recuperate before our last long day over to the Schonbiel Hut. The change also allowed us to cross the final hurdle, the Col de la Tete Blanche one day ahead of schedule, using an early start from Arolla, so we just beat the weather, which broke on the home run to Zermatt on the last day. It was a great trip with a great group of people.
