We held a Guides training day (CPD) on short roping in Langdale today. Here’s a “top tip” for tying on the middle man. I usually use a back threaded overhand knot on a short bight of rope these days, in line with current standard practice. However, I like the method shown in the photo using a bowline in place of the back threaded overhand knot. The bight itself is made using an overhand as per normal. The free end of the bight that is left after tying in with the bowline is kept really short, and clipped in with krab so it can’t pull through.
