It’s wonderful to have the opportunity to go on exciting trips, but you don’t have to travel around the world spending loads of time and money to have a lot of fun! Some of the best adventures can be found close to home, and we are lucky enough to live in the English Lake District. The incredible winter of 2010 was a wakeup call for me, and we had a fantastic time climbing and skiing routes we thought we’d never see in such amazing condition, right on our doorstep, literally. It brought home to me what a special place the Lake District is, and I resolved to spend far more time exploring here.
In the Lakes I provide instruction, skills training, coaching and guiding in rock climbing, abseiling, general mountaineering for the adventurous walker, scrambling, navigation including GPS, alpine preparation, crevasse courses and expedition training. All these activities can run at any time of year that I’m not in the Alps or off on a trip somewhere. (You can check my availability here). Whenever winter conditions permit I provide winter skills tuition and guiding in climbing and mountaineering in the Lakes as well as in Scotland, and there’s even ski mountaineering here on those amazing, rare occasions when we have full snow cover!
I can introduce you to climbing and abseiling, help you transfer from the climbing wall to the outdoors and teach you to lead routes safely. We can work on everyday climbing rope work skills, learn self rescue techniques and how to deal with “situations”, and we can tackle specific technical issues that concern you. I will help you gain confidence to go out and do your own thing and help you improve your climbing. Or I can simply guide you on the routes of your choice.
I have bases for instruction and guiding in other parts of the UK too. My club, the Oread MC, has huts in the Peak District (where I was brought up and my mother still lives) and North Wales close to Snowdon. I use these as bases for rock climbing and alpine preparation courses from time to time. Scotland was where I first set up as an Aspirant Mountain Guide running Winter Skills Courses from Glen Feshie in the Cairngorms. I still run Winter Skills Courses and guiding from March House and also other parts of Scotland, and I make occasional visits north of the border outside of the winter months too.
In the Lake District I also deliver technical and safety support and motivational lectures to the Lakes basedDove Nest Group, where my wife Rebekah works as a management consultant and trainer.
